A balcony reflector that follows the sun – Testimony of Elisabeth in Sète

Elisabeth is fortunate to live in Sète, in the south of France, where the weather is often good. On top of that, she lives in a south-facing apartment but the sun was not coming home because of a building opposite… She found, by chance in a newsletter, the right solution with the help of Espaciel to solve this situation and make her living room brighter. Discover here another article of a room without sun exposed south.

Background to Elizabeth’s situation

A south-facing apartment with little sunshine

I live in Sète, in the south of France, in an apartment just opposite a theatre. My apartment is on the first floor of a 3-storey building. I have 3 French windows in my living room and I am south facing. This room should be perfectly luminous, only here it is, the theatre opposite is much higher than the building I live in (4 floors).

Daylight and sunlight are blocked by it for much of the day. In the summer, I can only have the sun at home from 5 p.m., as soon as it has passed behind the theatre in the west. In winter, the sun is too low to reach my house. It’s a pity because in Sète, there is a lot of sun and I can’t enjoy it at home!

Espaciel sur ConsoGlobe

I am particularly interested in organic products and I subscribe to various newsletters on this subject. It was in an email from ConsoGlobe that I read an insert dedicated to Espaciel. Finding the concept interesting, I clicked to discover more. I browsed through the site and thought that this product could help me bring the sun into my home.I phoned Jérémie, Espaciel lighting consultant, who gave me information and recommended installing an 80cm balcony reflector on the balustrade of my French window. So I wanted to do a test on a French window and ordered my reflector.

The Espaciel solution

Un réflecteur de lumière qui suit le soleil

I installed the product right after I received it. It was pretty simple, the way I tinker around a lot. However, I realized that this first reflector was not totally suitable for my situation. The classic balcony reflector allows only one rotation in the axis of the window: from top to bottom to redirect daylight to the ceiling or deep into the room.

I couldn’t catch the sun, yet that was what I was looking for first. I went back to my installation in Jérémie by phone and he found me a more appropriate solution: a double rotation reflector. Espaciel was in the process of designing one for another customer at that time.

In contrast to the classic balcony reflector, it has a central mounting that allows a second possible rotation: the light reflector can be rotated from right to left and up and down. This is a good solution if you want to follow the sun like I do: you can position the reflector according to the time of day so that it redirects the sun’s rays inside the room.

My last question was about the fixing of the reflector: there is a lot of wind in Sète and that made the reflector move. Gabriel, an engineer at Espaciel, sent me a safety strap to attach the reflector to the railing, so the installation is 100% safe.

The sun’s coming into my room!

What I find very pleasant is that the sun comes into the room! In the morning I tilt the light reflector to the left and at noon I tilt it rather to the right: I follow the sun manually. Thanks to this, I manage to capture its rays and redirect them in my living room: it’s very easy to use. Moreover, I can see the blue sky of my living room: it is reflected in the reflector, which makes the installation of the reflector very discreet.

Moreover, the service is great, the Espaciel team answered all my questions and requests. At first, I was rather skeptical and wanted to benefit from the satisfied/refunded offer, but thanks to Espaciel’s support I now have the product and the effect I was hoping for!
