A ground floor flat offers many advantages, starting with accessibility. In the city, a ground floor apartment is often the only way to benefit from a small garden or a private exit. It is easier to go out in the city when you don’t have to climb stairs.
Despite all its qualities, a ground floor flat has two recurring problems: lack of light and humidity.
A flat on the ground floor is often darker than a flat on the upper floors. This is mainly due to the buildings around the flat. For example, a ground floor flat with a courtyard is enclosed. The buildings forming the inner courtyard block out the sun and the light from the sky.
Skylight is nevertheless present on the ground floor. It can be available in abundance. The addition of light reflectors in front of window openings or French windows provides more light. This makes the home brighter, as if it were one or two floors higher.
